When the city feels too loud and the apartment walls start closing in, sometimes all you need is a quick escape. That’s exactly what this solo microadventure was about. The forecast looked rough—one weather app claimed a 100% chance of rain, while another offered slim hope with just 64%. By noon, I rolled the dice, packed up the Volvo XC70, and hit the road.
A Solo Car Camping Setup for Rainy Weather
This wasn’t just any campout—it was a rainy day test of adaptability and gear. With wind and showers looming, I put together a flexible setup designed to handle it all:
- Hammock Stand with Bug Net: A cozy way to stay off the wet ground, protected from the inevitable swarm.
- SUV Awning: Attached to the XC70, this gave me shelter to work, cook, or just wait out bursts of rain.
- Liftgate Tent & Air Mattress: My backup plan in case the rain came down too hard or the wind kicked up too much for the hammock.
Back to Basics: Charcoal, Fire, and Minimal Gear
I love these kinds of weekends—not because they’re extreme, but because they strip things down to the essentials. No frills, just practical solutions, and a connection to the moment. Rainy weather makes things real. You find out if your setup works and if you’re mentally ready for the little inconveniences.
Why I Camp in the Rain (On Purpose)
Because nature doesn’t wait for perfect forecasts. Because peace of mind sometimes requires getting a little wet. Because escaping the city—even for one rainy day—can be enough to reset everything.
If you’re into hammock camping, solo SUV setups, or just need a reminder that a little weather shouldn’t stop you—this one’s for you.
