I’ve been poking around the world of SUV and liftgate tents since 2024, just casually keeping an eye out for something that might fit into my setup. Last year, I picked up one of those small awning-style tents that basically turns the open back of your car into a screened-in shelter. Honestly, it was a great addition—simple, lightweight, easy to throw up when I needed some shade or bug protection. That little tent made me realize how much a small piece of gear can add to the whole experience.
Since then, I’ve been tempted to upgrade to something with a bit more coverage. The Idoogen series caught my attention—especially the mid-sized model. It looked super versatile and seemed like a great fit. But they’re no longer available on Amazon, and importing one now would come with extra fees that just don’t fit my budget.
When my kids asked what I wanted for Father’s Day, I mentioned the SUV tent and said I’d chip in if they found one. Idoogen was out, so I started looking around again and came across the Kampkeeper SUV tent. Reviews were kind of mixed, but I usually take those with a grain of salt anyway. Everyone uses gear differently, and expectations vary a lot.
The tent showed up today, and I’ve got to say—it looks promising. It’s not massive, but it’s big enough to give some real coverage from the sun and rain. One side and the rear flap can unzip to open things up and add a little more shelter. It’s the kind of setup that makes sense for someone who wants more comfort without overcomplicating things.
I haven’t had the chance to try it out in the wild yet, but I’m already glad I took a chance on it. It’s the kind of gear that feels like it’ll earn its keep quickly. More to come once I get it out on a proper trip.
Following day, the rain held off long enough for the first tent setup, here is a short video, full video will be in a few days.
