“PTSD doesn’t work on a calendar. But neither does healing. We show up anyway.”
It’s been a tough stretch lately.
I haven’t been able to get out as much as I’d like—Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis have turned every step into a reminder that the body’s not always on board with the mind’s ambitions. But you adapt, right?
So, two short rides a week—that’s what I’m managing. They’re not long. They’re not epic. But they’re something. I get on the bike, feel the wind, push the pedals just enough to remind myself I’m still in motion. That’s my version of adventure this week.
Back at the apartment, Miss Maisy keeps me grounded—literally and emotionally. She’s not much for words, but she’s a damn good companion. She’s been a constant, especially on days where the trails are calling but my heels are barking louder.
Meanwhile, I’ve been sinking time into the Insta360 X3. The old one served me well, but let’s just say its lenses have seen better days. The new X3 is dialed in now—firmware tweaked, settings fine-tuned, and I’ve been playing with a few “creative hacks” to push it just a little further. If I can’t go far, I can at least capture what’s close, and make it look epic.
I have been out touring the city of Saint John —just being a local tourist, seeing the city with fresh eyes. Sometimes that’s all it takes: slowing down, revisiting old spots with a new lens (literally), and appreciating what’s right here. But the weather’s been moody, just like my ankles. Sometimes life tells you to stay put, whether you like it or not.
And truthfully, late June always hits a little differently.
This time of year brings up a lot—June 28, 1990, changed everything. My motorcycle accident wasn’t just a crash; it was a fork in the road I never saw coming. I try not to dwell on it, but even after all these years, PTSD doesn’t work on a calendar. It shows up in small ways. A mood shift. A sense of distance. That familiar tug of something unresolved. It’s part of why I live the way I do now, and part of why I’m on disability today.
But this is where I am.
And every short ride, every edited clip, every quiet moment with Miss Maisy—those are wins. Not flashy ones. But real ones.
Still, there’s always something to explore. A corner of your neighborhood. A new setting on your camera. A moment of peace in the middle of a heavy memory.
Adventure doesn’t always look the way you planned it—but it still counts.
